Male infertility

What is male factor infertility?

Male infertility means a man has trouble helping his partner become pregnant, even after trying for 1 year with regular unprotected sex.

What causes it?

  • Low sperm count or slow-moving sperm
  • Blockage in the sperm tubes
  • Infection
  • Hormone problems
  • Smoking, alcohol, drugs, or some medicines
  • Being overweight
  • Swollen veins around the testicles (varicocele)

What are the signs?

Most men do not have any symptoms. The only sign may be difficulty having a baby.

How is it checked?

We may do:

  • A physical examination
  • A semen test (to check sperm)
  • Blood tests for hormones and general health
  • An ultrasound if needed

Can it be treated?

Yes. Treatment depends on the cause and may include:

  • Medicines
  • Surgery (if needed)
  • Healthy lifestyle changes
  • Fertility treatments if required (e.g., IVF)

What can you do?

  • Stop smoking and avoid tobacco
  • Limit or avoid alcohol
  • Eat healthy food
  • Exercise regularly
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Get enough sleep
  • Avoid too much heat around the testicles

When should you see a doctor?

  • If you have problems with erection, ejaculation, or intercourse
  • If you have been trying for 1 year and no pregnancy
  • If you have pain or swelling in the testicles
